- Elephant Falls
One of the popular waterfalls in Meghalaya is Elephant Falls, a magnificent three-tier cascade. It is situated near Shillong Peak and is known as ‘Ka Kshaid Lai Pateng Khohsiew’ by locals, which means ‘three step waterfalls’. Surrounded by dense forests, this waterfall in Shillong is a sight to behold after the monsoon season, specifically from October to December.

Its name was given by the Britishers because of a large rock that resembled an elephant at its base. Unfortunately, the rock was destroyed during an earthquake and no longer exists. Only 12 kms away from Shillong city, this spot is a popular choice for both tourists and locals, especially on weekends.

A three-level stream, Bishop falls rolls down the East Khasi Hills from a height of approximately 443 feet, making it one of the most spectacular twin falls in Meghalaya. With its thick forests surrounding it, Beadon falls offers a spectacular view of the surrounding area.

A seven-step cascade, known as Nohsngithiang Falls or Mawsmai Falls, it is the most beautiful waterfall in Meghalaya. From 1033 feet, Seven Sisters Falls cascade down the limestone cliffs of Khasi Hills, making it one of the tallest waterfalls in India.

However, it has gained a reputation as one of the most hazardous waterfalls in Meghalaya due to its slippery rocks, resulting in numerous accidents. As a precautionary measure, the local tourism department has restricted access to the falls, but visitors can still marvel at its beauty from Happy Valley. Unfortunately, trekking down to the waterfall is no longer permitted.
7. Dainthlen Falls
The Dainthlen Falls, located at Sohra, near Cherrapunji, is a picturesque waterfall that is best known for its stunning vistas and marvellous beauty.

This waterfall is located inside Mawhplang Sacred Forests and it is a calm and serene fall that rolls down from a great height. It is one of the most spectacular falls in the state. For Mawphlang Falls, drive down the Mawsynram-Shillong Road for about 25 kms. The approach road is forested, and a short trek is required from the end point of the road.
There are many things to do at Mawphlang Falls, including swimming and diving in the plunge pool. The local people worship trees in Mawhplang Sacred Forest. Trekking through the forest and experiencing this worship is also very memorable.
